210 Mainly SA and CA Cichlid Display Help Choose

Sticking with one or the other is wise. For an SA community, I'd look at some these to start off:
Crencichla zebrina
Wild-type Oscar
Green Terror male
Threadfin Acara
Blue Acaras
Bolivian Rams
Biotodoma Cupido
Chocolate Cichlid
Green Phantom pleco
Red Terror female (maybe)

If I was going to "cheat", I'd do a school of Roseline "sharks" because they are beautiful and look like a SA fish to me anyway, kind of like a bigger/better pencilfish.
this list is pretty good, but I would not do a Red Terror/Festae with those species, and I would be very cautious about either sex of a Green terror. The Bolivian Rams will probably perish, I couldn't even get mine to thrive in a tank w/ a Gymnogeophagus balzanii and EBJDs half as big as the Rams.

Eliminate those 3 species, and you might be onto something here.

Also, Knifefish should not be kept with Cichlids or toothy fish in general. They're a target for aggression and cichlids can't resist nipping at their fins, which easily become infected. I would vote "NO" for the Knifefish

Yeah, I wouldn't use them all together, at least not in a 210. Just listing the species I'd be interested in. I don't know though, I may be stubborn enough that I'd have to try it and see for myself. :p

Here are some other SA cichlids on my short list:

Chanchitos:
Australoheros oblongum
Australoheros sanguinae

Checkboards:
Dicrossus filamentosus
Dicrossus maculatus

Dwarf acaras:
Laetacara curviceps
Laetacara araguaiae / buckelkopf
Laetacara dorsigera

We've all been there too.....

I like this one better - Curviceps should be a great start to any tank, then you can add more fish from there. I would add new speces from that point that were only a fraction more aggressive at a time, slowly moving up. When you see the Curviceps getting stressed or picked on, you stop adding fish and start removing the most aggressive fish......and go backwards until the Curviceps is comfortable again.

One way to build a cichlid community. Then again, I have my SAs sharing their tank atm.....my small Honduran Jags are using it for a growout, and along w/ a small male Convict they seem to fit right in with the mild mannered SAs. It won't last though, and i'm not gonna try to make it lol was never the plan.
