16 tank system sump media

Building a 16 tank ranging 10-20 gallon system have a 75 gallon I'm gonna use for a sump was wondering what would work best for filter media have heard a lot of people swear by the lava rock what do you guys think

I don't care for lava rock. Some swear by it but I have had the little pieces end up in too many places to trust it. Is your sump going going to be a trickle, submerged or moving bed filter? That will have a lot to do with best selection of media. That, and bioload.

I belive submerged was gonna have the lava rock to one side and the pump on the other
 
I'm in the lava rock camp. It's too cheap and effective to not use. I will say, however, if you are going to have a very high bio-load it would be better to use matrix. Also, I can vouch for what JK47 JK47 said. Unless you screen it properly small pieces will end up in unfortunate places. This can be averted by sorting the rock by size, or using a foam block on the outlet side of the media chamber.
 
if ur gonna have submerged, best to use either lava rock or good old ceramic rings. Or use fluidized K1 media.
