Hi all,

I'm new to fish keeping and this forum, I have 5 dovii fry that are almost ready to leave the tank I believe ;but I just wanted to make sure they're healthy and on the right tracks.

I have a 75l tank and they seem to be happy in it for the last 7 months that I've had them, apart from they eat any other fish I may try to keep in there, but I suppose that's habitual from what I've read about them.

I have a few pictures of them and was hoping to hear you opinion on their health, one of them spears to have a scab or something and I think that's from its aggressive tank mate.image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg

I'm sure they are ready. Be ready for an absolute monster whenever you find the one you want to keep.

P.S. seeing as youre new to the hobby I'll just say it-you won't be able to keep all 5 together much longer.

Thanks, yeah I figured as much but I don't want to sell them to someone who won't look after them properly and I don't know anyone with a big enough tank.

I'm assuming the one that's growing the least (chappo as I've named it) is actually a female where as Putin the biggest (pictured) is almost at maturity. The rest I assume are male... Does anyone have more information about how to identify the sexes if they're premature?

That may not be the case. Theres no way to tell that I know of until they put on way more size. You have 5 potentially 2 foot long fish there lol, they have a ton of growing to do.

Well that would explain their appetite, I've come back to a dead shark, 9 tetra spines(sometimes with a head attached)and a MIA shrimp and a torpedo barb... They're very selective of their tank mates, the plecco and the blood parrot fish seem to be fine with them however.

I'm still concerned about the White scar/streak on one of the dovii's head... Is it actually a scar or have I got that wrong

dovii will tolerate, in 99.9% of cases, NO tank mates even if some survive longer than others. They are open water predators in the wild in one of the more inhospitable water ways in the world. They have aggressive tendencies regardless of wc or cb lol.

get a better pic of the white area, I can't really tell.

out of curiousity, what are your long term plans for these guys? Your tank you have them shouldnt have lasted 7 months....maybe 6 at best. Not trying to start a fight ,simply asking

Aha yeah I've been thinking that since I've got them, I was hoping to find them a good home, I suppose me making this forum was a part of that step tbh ... Just want to make sure they're in tip top condition before I let them go

image.jpeg I think it's a little clearer here...

that looks like a healing injury. probably the start of territorial disputes among the ranks there. Salt and clean water, he'll be fine.

they look good, move them on now to someone with AT LEAST a 250 gallon or 1000 litre tank to start. these fish need room. Also, make sure whoever you sell them to understands the size requirements and care needed for a single species fish. They won't be able to add friends lol.

They are grow much much faster with bigger tank, pick the 2 that you think it's a male and female and put them in different tank and monitor them, the biggest one might kill the one you assume it's female (it's might be a weakest growing in the pack so it doesn't mean it's a female).
