Black racer (coluber constrictor)
Black rat snake ( pantherophis alleghaniensis). Two different species.

no, Pantherophis obsoleta and Coluber constrictor are 2 totally different species.we only have timber rattlers in very very very limited areas here, I've personally never seen one, just know where they are supposedly seen frequently.
Are these snakes the same species that are referred to as black racers too?

with a little practice you can tell them apart......it IS tough though w/ 2 uniformly all-black snakes... but there are a few tellsright on, I have very little knowledge of snakes so I didn't know.
well since I don't think I've seen either around my area in a few years I may bite the bullet, build an enclosure and get me an eastern rat snake. My guess is the snakes I saw were indeed rat snakes seeing as they get larger than the racers and most were hanging from trees or old farm houses in the woods. The one I picked up off the bike trail I told you about was a pretty massive animal, cut the circulation off in my hand while holding it.with a little practice you can tell them apart......it IS tough though w/ 2 uniformly all-black snakes... but there are a few tells
If you are looking into getting a snake i would choose a rat snake over a racer. . I've kept a few different species over the years and even bread corn snakes. I have always liked them better than the other snakes I've kept: pythons, boas, anacondas, king snakes etc. just do some research first on what you may want.right on, I have very little knowledge of snakes so I didn't know.
The oxymoron in Coluber constrictor is that is is NOT a constrictor.....Racers are "grabbers" and do not use constriction to kill preywell since I don't think I've seen either around my area in a few years I may bite the bullet, build an enclosure and get me an eastern rat snake. lol what is a "bread corn snake"? Is that like a Wheat bread corn snake........how about whole-grain oats?If you are looking into getting a snake i would choose a rat snake over a racer. . oh no no I wasn't planning on keeping a racer, I just don't know which species I see in my area. I'd rather collect one from the wild but it seems unlikely. I'd love to raise an eastern rat snake to 5-6 foot long, good talking piece with guests lolIf you are looking into getting a snake i would choose a rat snake over a racer. .
