What do you believe is the best substrate for a planted aquarium with the exception of dirt I don't mind spending the money on a few different substrates to mix like fluorite and Eco complete or floramax and fluorite or any other combination I definitely do not want to deal with dirt....thank you for all your help

I'm working on substrate as well, and it depends on what your looking for out of your tank. The Flourite and Eco complete seem pretty good as they have a high CEC, then you have safe T sorb which also has a high CEC but is cheaper, though it can cause a pH crash, there is also (holy run on sentence) turface ace which is cheaper but has a high CEC. The problem with turface and safe T sorb is they are very light. You could also use black diamond blasting sand, but this will need root tabs.

I have used eco complete and flourish with success but my plants are low maintenance. Java moss and fern, anubias, horn wort, Pothos

Yes but its grown emersed with only root system in water. Its makes a very good, easy to grow nitrate remover

Ok so all the leaves are out of the water with the roots hanging in the tank or is the whole plant under water
