Electric blue acara help

It's staying up top to steer clear from tankmates in my opinion. If there was a small EB group, It'd be a little more active and stick together. The EB Acara looks healthy to me and the sunken belly can occur on fry since they're tank raised.

The sex of this fish is uncertain. I've had many spawning pairs, and still can't tell if its a male or female. They both show their breeding dress, had females larger than males and vice versa. Females can get long dorsal and anal fins too. Only way I'm able to visually see the difference is the when the female drops her tube. Just my thoughts here. Good luck nonetheless.

You are absolutely right, thought that was tube of the male in the pic. I also have a pair but it took some time to tell them apart.

EB Acara are difficult specie to sex. It's simpler once they pair to determine. OK, your female and this one is male; I think.... lol. These are difficult because both their breeding dress carries a dark color tone over the bright blue. They kinda look like twins. Male or female will mouth brood and watch over fry. Size, shape, and fin lengths can go vice versa. Only venting is the way to go, but these buggers are small cichlids.

I got lucky they paired up in the lfs, called someone immediately and told them I want those 2 lol. My male is larger than the female now so no problem identifying who's who.:)
