I'm formulating my next build in the back of of my mind.
I'm thinking of an 8' acrylic 240 with an external coast to coast overflow. No teeth in the weir, just a smooth flow.
I've already talked to a custom builder that is leery of building it. He would be happy to build it internal but not external.
Does anyone have experience with a tank like this?

Glass or acrylic

Acrylic overflow on an acrylic tank.

I'm envisioning a 6' long overflow that would leave 6" on each end to make room for return lines.
Of course there would need to be a couple of pieces of acrylic left in the slot for strength. I'm guessing probably three 2' long slots as a weir. Some may think that would weaken the back wall of the tank but I would think bonding the overflow over that area would gain back much of the rigidness.

I'm GUESSING anyways!

wednesday13 wednesday13 would be the guy to ask but I think it would work fine. Most people do internal with acrylic and extenal with glass. Why it is that way I am not sure. Personally I would want an external box aswell with covers for access to the plumbing

Ive seen plenty acrylic tanks with external overflows...If ur builder can put it in the inside...he can just as easily put it on the outside. I agree, o.p. it will strenghten the back wall... not make it weaker. Just keep in mind moving the tank through a standard door as the box inside or out may make a big difference for ya in the tanks inside dimensions.

Yup, that's why I installed a 42" door when I build my man cave where I want to install it. :)

Nice :) ... id go for atleast a 8'x30" footprint then rather than 8x2 if u can swing the price dfference.

when i had my old tank with c2c overflow i had it made so they
were braced for extra support, never had a problem. i would just
go for a 8x4x24-30" height if your going to go 30" width. standard
panel size is 8x4 so price shouldnt be that much higher since theyre
using the same amount of acrylic sheets anyways.
