Dovii - Size to age ratio

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got my dovii (Morgoth) in late august 2013 at about the 6.5 to 7 inch range. I had him in a 55 until March of 2014, so about 7 months before I upgraded him to a 125. After the first year he was probably 11 to 12". After 3yrs he is approx 14", so around 1.5 per year in the last 2. I was not living at the same location as the fish for the first 7 months of this year, so wc, feeding, etc... were sporadic at best. Had that not been the case, my guess is he would be closer to 15". I have a 96"x48"x27" plywood tank under construction, and hope to move the fish by the end of the year. Hopefully with the extra room he will have a nice growth spurt.

He's beautiful!!! I told my hubby if we ever get a big, nasty fish we're naming it Morgoth, (Tolkien for the win!) but you've beaten me to it. :P

Thank you. I thought my Dovii was slow growing. But finding out its probably average. Think people don't realize how old a 4 to 5 inch juvenile is when they first get it home. Then they go on to say my fish reached 12inch in its first year.

Agreed, anyone who has bred cichlids and grown fry knows how slow they grow.

My dovii's name is "Spook" he is 12-13 inches.. you dovii keepers know why :) eventually I hope to rename him as Glassbanger
Indeed, I call it a suspicious nature. You would think I had a .357 in my hand instead of a cell phone when I try and take pictures.

I thought the same thing. I am sure that some may hit the 18 to 20 range in the same time frame, but that does not seem typical. Ditto on the Hatiensis, you got some awesome fish in the stable.

There are always a few that way outgrow the rest of the batch, and a few runts. Most are in the middle of the bell curve.

Top down shot during a fin level water change, I took it down to about 6" of water and his back was barely submerged. Tank is 18" wide.
