This can be misleading... Yes the growth rate of the fish will be different if your Oscar is in a 55 in comparison to growing in a 210, but don't be confused into thinking that this means oscars grow to their tank size.

Ps 2 oscars in a 55 hex is a sad thought to be honest.

There very interactive fish however, they can be dirty. I say go for it and get the oscar or 2... you'll be really happy with your purchase.

2 Oscars let alone 1 should not be in a 55 gallon! You simply need a wider tank than 12". And, Oscars do not grow according to their tank size and how you feed them. If you consider a fishes growth being stunted because they don't have enough room to grow to their full potential as happy, you should not be keeping fish.

Do not get Oscars for a 55 gallon tank, please. I guarantee you can find a better suited fish. Tell us more of what you are looking to have in a fish and we can help better. What is it about a Oscar that you like? Do you want a single fish in the tank or a community of fish? Are you looking for aggressive or peaceful fish?

Lastly, seriously, I commend you for coming on here and asking all the right questions first before buying a fish. Researching a fish is all too often done after the fish is purchased and mistakes are made. Welcome to MFK!:headbang2

55g is WAY WAY WAY too small for two oscars! 75 is the MINIMUM for ONE oscar, IMO. they do NOT grow to their tank size, rather, they are stunted if they are kept in a tank that is too small. i'm very sorry but i seriously doubt that they "love it". these fish need a much bigger home. 125g is the minimum for two oscars, and bigger is always better...

You should get down to Wal-Mart and buy their cheapest gravel vacum (10$ or so) and a big bucket and get to work on your families 10g, suck out a bucket of water once or twice a week. Be sure to add some water conditioner when you put in the fresh water. The fish in it will thank you, and start to look a little more colorful.
Since you already have the 55 I really would consider something else, maybe a pair of convicts? Have you read about the nitrogen cycle yet?

A 55 for an Oscar is borderline big enough and he wouldn't be very happy when he got larger. A jack Dempsey or green terror or something that gets no bigger than 10-12 inches would be better for a 55 gallon(I've had a 14 inch Oscar before, I couldn't imagine him living in a 12 in wide tank.)

Don't get an Oscar in a 55. Get a short body flowerhorn. They are monster fish in every sense of the word and will fit in a 55. The oscar will be too big in a year.
