Best way to move fish to new house?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1. large or multiple water totes/buckets with lids.
2. large pond liner so you can cut them to size if you have more than 1 tote/bucket.
3. multiple 24-48 shipping heat packs
4. battery operated air pump with air lines and air stones.
5. duct tape.

get totes or buckets with lids that are on secure. drill the lid with a hole to run
the air line/air stone. activate the heat packs and put in the bottom of the tote
or bucket and place the liner on top then duct tape it to secure the liner. fill
it with 50% tank water and 50% new water (treated). move the live stock over
and your good to go.

tomojsg tomojsg has it. Still with the hassle of moving by itself adding setting up a fish tank and keeping them alive to the mix ugh. Move yourself and then set back up. Maybe out of keeping for a month or two maybe and then you can pick different or the same stock and have much less stress.

I just don't want them to die and don't know how you find other hobbyists. I mean they're only a year old. I'm trying to figure out how to move in general, I own a lot of crap.... Plus a horse, two dogs, kid, all their crap, all my crap :( it's just stressful. Doable but stressful. I'm about to hire a moving company

I have fishes lived in bucket for more than a week before I can get my tank ready when I moved to new house, Kittie and Tom pretty much nailed the progression, I did change water everyday to keep thing in check, no one die or sick being in bucket minus not much room to swim :p

one big Rubbermaid tote, air pump and stone, and heat packs like tomo suggested. I kept my US native fish in a tote for 2 weeks while I got the plumbing right on my 310 gallon tank. No filter, just an airstone. No one died-4 black crappie, 3 yellow perch, bullhead catfish, channel catfish, coosae bass, 4 sunfish. Lol fish are resilient, they'll make the day and some change in a tote.

It sounds too stressful for you to engage in moving the fish too. One way to de-stress and help yourself do the move on your own is prioritize. Sell or donate the fish I'd say and guard your sanity. As simple as it may be, it is also loaded with things that can and will go wrong, esp. if you are not sufficiently experienced and also handy.

I've lost ~70% of my collection (1000 fish) on my move from NY to FL but partially because I am a bonehead and partially because I was overwhelmed just like you are now.

You moving 1000 fishes, he only have like 20 fishes.
If I have a 1000 fishes to move I would sell the least favorite one to lessen the burden of work, hell if I have 100 fish to move I would sell them all and only keep the one I love the most :P

The OP is a female.

Yes, one can accomplish amazing things on paper.

Among mentioning obvious things, you forgot that the OP is more than likely not a bonehead. :D

I'm planning a move that is a 26 hr drive (if you dont take breaks) away. I have a 125 and 55. 55 is basically empty, one little convict in there. (I know right?)

The 125 has 2 Oscars about 6-7", 7 convicts of various sizes including a mature male that is 4-4.5", a 5" blue acara, 2 firemouths that are 4-5", a 9-10" pleco, some unknown African about 4", and a GT that is probably 2.5-3".

How do I best move them? I thought about having family out there buy another tank and ship them (not sure how or what it would cost) figure out a way to take tank and fish in buckets. OR sell them in CL and hope they get a good home then start over at new location.

I don't want them to die...

Check out my thread in the ARTICLES subgroup. It'll give you my experience.
