I was away for 2 week vacation and returned home finding a pair of Cryptoheros nanoluteus fiercely guarding a batch of fry. They showed no fear of fighting off much bigger tankmates, sort like David against Goliath. It's amazing that a tank full of hungry fish that have not been fed for 2 weeks show no attempt to prey on the fry. The nanoluteus fry do not seek to hide in the rock but swim out in the open and the parents just follow the swarm. The tankmates get the message and stay away from fierce parents and swarm. I know eventually the parents will abandon the fry and hope a few fry can make it.

Wow, they're beautiful. The Vieja is barely reacting to them lol cool video. I don't know much about this species, are they always black and yellow to some degree? I know they're in breeding dress in the video.

Here is another scene. Not just fighting the big guys , the parents have to defend against smaller guys that can easily sneak in to rob the fry. Amazingly, the tankmates ignore the fry and feed on the pellets as if the fry don't exist.

Love how they look in there breeding dress so intense
Cryptoheros sp are very good parents

Great videos and sweet pair. Are you planning on removing some fry to grow out, or just wait and see what happens?

This is their first spawn, I'll let nature take care of them. The fry are free swimming and not easy to catch. In the next spawn, I may siphon off some wigglers and raise in a 10g tank. So far I have not observed any tankmates actively hunting down the fry. If they do, the fry won't last long. The parents are only 2 to 3.5" , pounding on 10 to 14" Veija that are likely 50 times heavier.
