Bettas don't tend to do well in tanks deeper than 40cm, i tried that and he wasn't his lively self. you can turn him into a player and give him some ladies if the depth isnt too much for him
The 120ltr Bruce was in was 41-43cms at the water level, and Miles is a way stronger swimmer than Bruce was (Miles is short finned, Bruce was a crown tail) so I assume he'd be right with the taller water level? I'm not claiming he will, just making an assumption.Bettas don't tend to do well in tanks deeper than 40cm, i tried that and he wasn't his lively self. you can turn him into a player and give him some ladies if the depth isnt too much for him
How big was the tank may I ask? And do you think that a larger/smaller tank would of made a difference? What was the scape like each time (if more than once)? What ratios did you have in the tank? Just curious as I'd like to reduce the chances a betta massacre where possible, so if you have experience with this I'd like to pick your brain.Always a gamble mixing males with females even when stocked with 8-10 females per male or at least that's what happened for me.
What would you think to be a "suitable" amount of ladies in a 6'x1'x1.5'? Miles will be the only male in there.I was stocking them in heavily planted 20gs for the most part and had limited success but plenty of fatalities, male to female aggression but female to female was a problem too. I have stocked them in 300g outdoor stock tank with other livebearers with slightly better results. Occasionally you will find a compatible harem but it does take quite a bit of selection IME
Well... I've been thinking about what's happening if Miles goes into the 6', and I'm THINKING (key word there is "thinking") about trying one of two things, either put Miles and a few " Milettes" in the 6', its big enough and with enough cover I'd hope they could get along... If that isn't a terrible idea, this is: trying two males in one tank... My thinking is similar to that with the "Milettes", with enough cover in a large tank would two males pretend to get along? Or should I just turn him into a man wh*re?
Or neither... Please don't say neither.... I have spare tanks that will be on hand in either situation for if something goes pear shaped, but what are my chances of needing them?
convict360 , what are your opinions on these ideas?
Feel free to invite other betta fanatics (or if you happen to be a betta fanatic reading this, feel free) to join the conversation, I want as many opinions as I can get before I try this...![]()
They claim about a square metre in the wild so, 9 square feet a betta male. You could probably get away with two males quite honestly, assuming it's heavily planted. Most info online, and my own experience is that male Betta occupy space 2x2 max as their territory.
Personally I'd use the 6' as an opportunity for something else, and keep the Betta in something smaller...a 6 foot tank is begging for some 7-8 inch fish at least imo![]()

Would a stocking of Miles, X15 white cloud minnows, X6 female bettas, X5-7 kuhllis and my tiny little cae work? The scape would have lots of wood and rock work, as well as a fair few plants for cover as well... This is all hypothetical atm, but if I go through with it, what are my chances of this working?
Before anyone mentions the cae, he's severely stunted from his previous home, I've had him for years and he's never bothered anyone.![]()
