Updates from the 300

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like polyaddict86 thinking about more bichirs. LoL he has an ambitious mind.

DMD123 DMD123 I am surprised you are still running canister on a 300. One thing I do wish is the fx6 come with wheels to roll it. LoL

If I had a 300, I would have run a sump filter system.

When I got the big tank, I already was running a 210g with two FX5's. I found a good 'sale' on an FX6 so I just added the third. (The sale was a typo at petsmart when the 6 first came out. The website showed the 5 with a reduced clearance price but I was pretty sure the market was all out of old stock. Sure enough when I ordered it, I got the new 6)

As time went on and a Black Friday came along I replaced one of the 5's with a 6 so that I could have a backup filter. Then this Black Friday came with another good opportunity to replace a filter came. So in the big picture my filters really did not cost that much and Im happy with them.

Im not against sumps but at the time when the tank got set up money was a bit tight since we were in the middle of a move and huge home remodel so having two 5's already saved some money. Who knows, I might eventually change things out at some point.

Some pics of the tank as it looks in the house. This was before I built the canopy. Looked good but just did not have a 'finished' look about it.

DMD123 DMD123 nice house and nice tank. I totally get you about saving money. The wife used to think the hobby was cheap until she found out how much each Eheim cost. LoL

I would have loved to get a couple Ehiem 2262's instead, but with the prices I paid for three FX5/6's it still was cheaper than one Eheim and thats saying I would still have to buy filter media.

The 300g was my 'downsizing', lol. Part of our move agreement between the wife and I was that I would keep less tanks but would be able to get one really big tank. So instead of a 210g, 75g, 40B and a fourth tank that was constantly changing, I am limited to my 300g, 65b and an empty 65b in the garage as my hospital/qt tank. Seemed like a fair compromise. There really is no room for any more anyway. We went from over 2000 sq. ft. to half that. Love the fact we are in a small rambler as opposed to a two story. So much easier to take care of the home now.

Your tank looks really nice. If starting from scratch, would a sump be less expensive? I am looking into getting a bigger tank, don't know much about canisters vs. sumps costs and filtration stats, maintenance. Only experience I have is cleaning canisters hahha. I see you have the 3 canisters. Are 3 necessary for a 300g, or would 2 be okay?

I bought my tank and it came with the sump, all i needed to add to it are the bio media, but if your starting from scratch you have to watch alot of diy sump in youtube to figure out how the sump works. Even me i own a sump im still confused on how it works. Canister i believe is already set to go.

DMD123 DMD123 how do you like having a 300g and two growout tanks vs a bunch of small tanks? I have a 150g, 40g x 2, 20g running right now. When I get the 240g up my wife want me to get rid of the 40g and 20g. Something about these 40g is making it hard for me to part with them.

Btw single story home is great but most two stories come with an insulated garage. Eheim 2262 is way too expensive. For the price of that filter you can have an unlimited supply of fx6. I got into the Eheim game with the pro 2 before they started the price hike.

three is probably necessary for a 300g if you want to keep a good amount of fish. Sump is not less expensive but give you unlimited options how you want to design it. You could even design it to plant pothos and use it as a growout for smaller fish.

It's actually easy to care for and I can focus on just the two main tanks. I guess my only 'regret' is that I cant add anything new. The 300 is established with very large fish and growing something out is not really an option. Then the other tank is dedicated to just the puffer since he is a solo predator. But happy with what I have going.
