New CITES additions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can imagine Brazil not granting very many if any export permits for the zebra pleco while at the same time they are destroying the habitat of the fish.In short, the fish in the wild are doomed.

Plecs are not my thing, i keep a few but i am not a avid collector.

I had a quick look, what i cant understand is why they are collected in the first place. There is literature on the mass breeding of them, so i see little reason to wild collect. Also yes they are from Brazil, but Singapore breeds them, although i would buy very little from there at the moment ;).

I would just advise people to buy carefully and think first, the fish is under alot of pressure in its habitat. Do we not have a duty to be unselfish, and not encourage the destruction of a species?

Whats more strange is i just myself, i didnt realize we have a direct database search to CITES here.

I did a search and the Zebra Plec dosnt show on the list...........

I will assume for now i am doing the search wrong, but keep it in mind...just in case ;)

Plecos are not my "thing" either as I have stated in the other thread on this subject.I guess it is a good thing for those who are into plecos that the fish is bred in Asia and as for plecos in the wild, specifically in Brazil,I would not be opposed to anyone collecting as many as they can from the area since the fish are going to be decimated by the dam construction...no one is being more selfish and encouraging the destruction of the species more than Brazil is.

I cant argue with that, to be fair i dont know enough about the situation there.

I have been collecting in the Amazon and Brazil a few times for work, Brazil has a strange attitude to conservation in general. Deforestation is a big problem there.
On the surface it looks like they are trying, but it is absolutely corrupt. Twice we have been offered a customs fast track.for the right price.

The environmental situation in Brazil is depressing; this was posted on Reuters a few days ago: http://www.reuters.com/article/brazil-deforestation-idUSL2N0FB1JN20130705

More links to the dam in question are here: http://www.arowanaclub.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=4951

My understanding is that bottom fish that need fast moving well oxygenated currents (like zebra plecos) are severely affected by dams. I know that most stingray species out of Brazil are also being put on CITES class 2, so I guess they are also affected by the dams.

Pardon the pun, such a damn shame.
