I've seen it a few times.
How common is it?
For baby machines like convicts, is it more likely to happen?

A few years back I obtained two breeding pairs (really prolific ones) of Neolamprologus brichardi "Damsel Cichlids." I also got two addition subordinate females, just in case. They were all taken from the same breeding swarm, one was the alpha breeding pair.

Well turns out the two males kept nesting and taking turns swapping roles, then killed off all the females. No matter what I did- remove one of the males, remove the other male, reset the tank, change everything, new decorations....idk, these two males just wanted to be ***.

In short, homosexuality is natural, even for kanye west.

I have heard of it, but never witnessed it. It seems like the female always initiated mating in the pairs I have had. I assume once the female is gravid eggs will be laid regardless and the female will pair with whatever fish is around that will tolerate it. If I had fish like that I would name them Pat and Chris.

my female Convicts do it all the time.....they dig a pit, lay eggs in it and then with in a day, they eat the eggs and tear the nest apart again

I don't care to ever have fry in my tanks but I do enjoy nesting behavior.

Just thinking about possible future set ups.

2-5 female Convicts are a much stronger force in an aggressive mixed cichlid community than just one. IDK about more of a force than a pair, but a harem, definitely better than a pair (it's like an "army" kind of). Just last night I pulled 4 more female Pinks out of my fry tank and added them to the 1.2 Pinks I already had in 2nd stage growout for 1; 6 ratio. The 2 other females in a different tank stand up to fish a single female would not. The same can be said for Jack Dempseys,, IME

It is very common in aquariums, and a great way for egg bound females to avoid death.
If they don't get rid of eggs, death can be the alternative. Many cichlids have done this in my tanks from rainbow cichlids to oscars, when the females deemed any male that I provided was not suitable. I had two female oscars that would lay eggs together every month or so, yet never accept any male I offered.

Awesome. I was hoping you chime in, duanes.

I've thought of a group of females but I don't want to deal with a group of cichlids lol. It would neat to buy two females and just let them become a wonderful little couple.
