found an interesting gt video, super friendly or pissed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats a real beauty i hope mine turn out like that i got a wild one caught buthas white trims rather than amber.

Beautiful Saum. He is obviously well taken care of. My electric catfish does that weird cuddle thing as well. I've been basically hand feeding him since he was fry. Was it the same with your GT? I don't like to anthropomorphize- but sometimes he doesn't want to eat and it really seems like he just wants to hang out- it's weird. He bites me when I try to remove my hand. I've heard theories that it has something to do with our natural electric current- or most likely it's the heat source he's associated with the hand. Plenty of fish love the heater and hang out/by or on it all day- we're set at 98.6 that's pretty warm

Touching fish can wipe off the slim coat leaving them open to infections, as the fish is going towards his hand I don't think it's stressing it to much
I hear this all the time but this isnt true.

If they get bit or want to get away from being stuck, they release the slime. Not if you pet them and they are willing to stay around.

Fish are permanently covered in slim coat, which has many properties the 3 most important are, acts as a barrier against pathogens found in the water and is able to kill some of these pathogens stopping the fish getting infections,
Reduce the drag of the fish,
Helps control osmoregulation
How quickly a fish can replace lost slime coat I don't know and how much extra risk the fish is put at I don't know either, but to me there is a potential risk to the fish from handling it and doesn't seem to be worth the risk.

Anyone have some proof on either sides of the slime coat theory? Got me curious now.
Just do a quick google search of fish mucus, loads of info out there on it.
Many medical research bodies are trying to find the active ingredient for use on humans.

they're not losing much IN the water that they're not able to replace--holding your fish OUT of water however is definitely damaging the slime coat and kind of a dick move. Some amphibians and even a few geckos can actually lose their skin as it pulls away on our salty greasy hands if you touch them with dry hands

my green terror that is sharing a tank with a rainbow shark eats food out of my hand and he is about 2.5 inches i wanted to decom that tank but i dont see me doing that now.
as tempting as it is i dont want to touch his skin i just think i might pass somthing to him even though my hands have been washed

In the past my most dominant male geophagus tapajos used to always attack me while I did tank maintenance.

He would bite push and bump me. I also tried to avoid him but often time I had to push him off of me and it never seems to harm him or cause and slime coat to come off.
