I think my senegal is a goner. :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I euthanized him today with clove oil. He seemed to be suffering.

My husband and I did an autopsy, and there was nothing in there - it wasn't the substrate. Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 was right (and I was hesitant to believe it) - his jaw was dislocated on the left side. That must have been painful. :(

So, I guess there is nothing I could have done to prevent this which is aggravating.

I'll go to the wet spot tomorrow and look at the palmas palmas and the delhezi and try again. I want another active poly with personality. And I think both species are gorgeous. But with the 3 foot dimension, even with 18" width, I don't think I can do both until I upgrade when we move in a year or so. I'd like to have both eventually.

RIP buddy - you were my gateway poly. <3

Sorry you had to put it down.

Total opinion since Ive owned both, but for activity level, I thought my delhezi was way more active than my palmas palmas. Also agression level was different. Granted the del was cb and the pp was wc. But the palmas was a mean little thing for an upper jaw. Delhezi was very well behaved in comparison.

The breeder based tank is good but its a tough call on that one... with only two polys you always have a chance that one will prove to be dominant and bully the other. This is where the extra space can help so that there is more spots for the less dominant to hide and a possibility to add a couple more polys to spread agression so that no one poly gets the brunt of it.

Sorry for the loss, i know its hard when your attached your pet, im the same way. This stuff we cannot prevent we can just hope for the best.

About getting the two polys, if i were you i would get them both, upper jaws usually slow down in growing when they hit 8", unless you are getting the big three on the upper jaw. Palmas palmas is the most nices pattern for me on upper jaws and del is really active, you'll love them both. Looking forward on seeing them two, lolz:)

So you're saying I could get 2 of these guys? In a 36 x 18 w x 24 d 65 gallon tank?

For 1 to 1.5 years until I upgrade. I don't want to short them or cause issues.

Or should I play it safe and just do one for now until the move?

You should be fine, with that size of tank you can put four. They only grow 12" the biggest but it will take a couple of years.
And realistically the real world sizes are likely smaller. I would be surprised if any sen got larger than 10" since those are captive born and the albino usually even stays smaller. With the del and palmas palmas I notice Wet Spot does list both as wild caught so there is a possibility of a fish bigger than 12" but they will likely slow down at 8-10" so you should be fine for a time.

I have the same 65b that I have used as a quarantine tank and while not perfect for floor space it does allow a lot because of the width and water volume.

Getting your new polys young and close to the same size and growing up together would make a difference. I personally could not just have 1poly in a aquarium by itself lol :)

it is really hard only having 1. Would not recommend lol. Trying to get more polys after I figure out what the heck is going on with my tank. Definitely having them grow up together helps. Cause then you can mix them, have more than one, and have a better chance of everybody getting along.
