My male dovii has started a new habit of striking the top of the water hard.. makes a pop sound and splashes water.. he is doing as if he is hitting a top lure or attacking prey.. he is about 8"..healthy and eats good.. water is about 81 degrees and good quality.. is this normal for a dovii? Any info would help thanks.

Some of my fish have and still do this. Sometimes there's something stuck to the glass lid on the inside or on top that catches their attention and sometimes they just do it.

I know dovii are usually bottom feeders, especially when younger. They tend to shy away from the top of the tank, since large birds, one of the doviis only real predators, are on the surface.

I dont think its common for a dovii to randomly attack a surface. Is there any bubbles popping there from perhaps an air stone? Think could be confusing the dovii..

Answer is still yes, but he never did it when I was watching, he was too busy watching me. I could just hear it. Often it was when I had my back to the tank feeding other fish. Maybe he was trying to tell me something. Condensation on the lids, bubbles on the surface or anything like that could be the cause.

Duanes posted a paper on the gut content of wild dovii a few days ago, it shows young doviis diet has a substantial amount of insects in it and even adults take insects. So in the wild dovii will and do eat of the service.
