After the water in my 200 gallon system goes through my 200 micron DIY parabolic filter sieve screen, two 200 micron filter socks (dirty water directed from the trough), and after my 30 gallon sand and gravel filter.

My water is getting a slight cloudiness to it due to the frequent feeding of fine powder starter feed to the 2000 or so trout fry in the main tank. I do keep the solids that settle in the bottom vacuumed out on a regular basis.

The think is the fry are really sensitive to suspend solids, and I thought since I have this thing laying around, as it came with a pool I use as a holding tank for seining, I could try it as an experiment. Worst case scenario it clogs too rapidly to be of use, and I discontinue using it. However it's not like the water is very dirty by the time it exits the sand filter, and would then be run through the cartridge filter before it goes back to the 160 gallon tank with 140 gallons of water.

Thoughts?

You maybe able to get away with using it as long there is a prefilter in place. Otherwise they do tend to clog quite easily, one small leaf and its all over...

You are on the right track. We run two Rainbow RTL-25 filters for mechanical filtration on our 300 gallon tank. We like them so much, we are going with six RTL-100s on the big tank.

RTLs are usually seen on big reef set ups for mechanical filtration. I sought advice from a reef man who sets up and maintains tanks, and he introduced us to Rainbow RTLs.

Sounds good.

I have mine hooked up in parallel so I can bypass the cartridge when I don't need it.

I ran one outside once and it shorted-out(wet?), but didn't have any issues when it was running.

I'm going to go with this style filter on our 600 gallon FRT tank some day. It'll be nice to have a better mechanical filter prior to the Aqua Ultima II filter. I think I'll run the bypass like kendragon has on his system.
