It's finally time for me to move my patient fire eels to their new tank. Unfortunately, life got in the way and they spent much longer in my 29 than I had anticipated (about 8-9 months). I got them at four inches and they are now up close to a foot each.

The new tank is a 220 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump underneath. I have bio media in the tank, but it is not cycled. I do have cycled bio media in my SunSun 303B that is on my 29 gallon tank that houses the eels currently.

My question is, what is the best way to move my eels and the bio media over to the new tank, so that I can get them out of the 29 asap?

Should I just take all of the media out of the canister and move it into the sump?

Should I keep the canister as is and move the whole thing over to my new tank (it will only cycle about once per hour, but should be effective)?

Should I keep the canister as is and move the whole thing over to the sump under the new tank (not sure how this is different than the new tank itself, but wanted the throw it out as an option)?

Thanks everyone

I'd just throw all the media and sponges from your canister into your sump. Then just be sure to slowly add new stock to the 220 over time to let the bacteria catch up to the new bio load.

I should have mentioned, the fire eels will be the only inhabitants for quite a while.

So, just put all the media from the current filter into the sump and run it like that? Sounds easy enough.

Yep. I'd keep an eye on your parameters for the next week or two just to be on the safe side, but you should be fine. Especially if you're not adding more fish for a while.

I did the same thing a few months back. But I moved the filters as they were... The larger volume of water for the same bioload will help too but the tank is still not fully established despite moving some old media.. so some extra large water changes and doses of Prime in between will help keep things healthy.
