I get some tanks cheaper than a dollar per gallon, I paid 55usd for my 70 lol

There's a thread on here where a guy combined three 55g into one long tank, it was pretty cool.

how would you go about doing that....how would you strip them apart, put them together so they hold and all that other nonsense......

If you went with a plywood Base you could have a 4 by 4 ft

and just seal the plywood w/ waterproof paint or polyurethane or what? How would a 48" X 12" + a 48" X 12" = 48" X 48"? Wouldn't it be 48"X 24"?

No you have 4 x 48 length of glass, lots of threads and youtube clips on how to do it
