Yeah, I think the original thought is that it might blend in with plants? But it doesn't at all! I used to have to try and hide it with plants, now it doesn't show.
I pretty much always replace returns with pvc spraybars instead. That wouldn't really work if you have fish that like swimming against the current though
Really easy and cheap too. I just make marks on the pipe where I want the holes, then just drill out the amount of holes you want. In the case of my axolotls, since they hate moving water, I put in a 12 inch spray bar and covered all the holes (except for one) with intake sponges. The sponges diffuse the current in a huge way, and the hole I left open is pointing up so it creates some surface agitation for oxygen exchangethat sounds like a fun project!
