Chocolate Cichlid in Community?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 4 juvies in a 40b, and even with the cramped quarters there is only mild aggression from the alpha. I expect once I move them into a larger tank it will be closer to zero aggression. Wonderful fish and should be much easier to stock around than most cichlids.

I have kept chocolate cichlids of all ages, including fry and breeding individuals.

I have kept my adults in a planted 125 with angels, kribensis, sharks, tetras, plecos, festivums, small catfish, bichirs, datnioids, loaches, etc...

Even when breeding they were all fine. They will eat things small enough to comfortably fit in their mouths, but that's it. They are great community fish. Kind of like an oscar, but even more peaceful. They are very expressive with color patterns.

Bottom line: you should be just fine.

awesome, thanks for the help. actually picked one up about an hour ago! color changes are incredible. I have a lot of fish that change color, but not like this. Happy with it already!

P Pomatomus - you kept chocolates with bichirs? I have another thread open and we are discussing cichlids with bichirs. Some thought that it might be challenging to feed the polys because chocolates are pigs. Did you find this true? Or how did you make it work?

Large pellets or chunks of food do the trick for me. I add a bunch at once and the cichlids can only chew so fast! Tetra Jumbomin, chopped shrimp, and live nightcrawlers are my feeds of choice.
