I can't get tilapia around here which I know many people feed so I'm wondering what else I can use. I have been feeding cod fillet and shrimp. I don't eat fish myself so I don't know much about it. Tuna and salmon looks different to other fish flesh, is it OK? What about squid? I've been assuming oily fish would be a bad idea, am I right or wrong about that?

I've fed my payara tilapia often. I've tried salmon and my fish love it! But salmon is VERY oily! The payara eats it so fast though that it doesn't have time to oil up the water surface lol

Sliced up fresh beef heart! My tank goes nuts for that stuff. It's messy though so use it sparingly :)

Cod, haddock, halibut, catfish and sole. I try to feed thiaminase free...with shrimp being the exception but since my p's are in love with it, they get to have it once a week. They also love salmon and trout, which is pretty oily but I've never had issues with water quality.

I also try to keep it mostly thiaminase free, I hope anyway.

Here's my list:

Frozen cooked shrimp (supposedly thiaminase free if cooked)
Frozen cooked Mussel (supposedly thiaminase free if cooked)
Frozen raw alaskan pollock
Frozen vitamin enriched bloodworm
Live river shrimp
Cockell when I can find it fresh

All treats of course, fed alongside a staple of Hikari Cichlid Gold for vitamins and added thiamine.

My cichlids love Mussel the most. It's their all time favourite, and some of them will take it from our fingers.

Thank you for your replies, that gives me more stuff I can get for them, it will be interesting to see what they like. I was never sure about whether the cooked prawn/shrimp that you usually see were OK or not. They did get lobster at Christmas and that certainly went down really well.

How do you guys get your fish to eat these fish fillets??? Do you cut them into strips / chunks and throw into the tank, or do you add other supplements or smell enhancers to it???

Coz i cant for the life of me get my Gymnothorax onto fish meat unless its alive and swimming in the tank...

One trick is to tie a piece of thread to a strip of tilapia fillet and pull the strip through the water like it's a fish swimming. After doing this a few times your fish will just start taking it when you drop it in the water
