Can I feed my fishes on alternate days?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Addi, that's a nice looking tank and I don't mean to go OT, but that's WAY too much bio load and not a good footprint for all the fish you have in there. I would feed as minimally as possible because the nitrates have to be through the roof with that bio load and only a 50% WWC. More feedings = more nitrates. I personally wouldn't keep more than the parrots in that tank.

Yes I am planning to either give away arowana after it reaches 16 inches or will buy a bigger aquarium.

Also how much do you feed in one serving if you feed them on alternate days? I mean how much should I feed big fishes like arowana and oscars? Is syphoning the tank every week necessary?

I have a 16" Lei that I feed 1/day. Some days just a few Hikari carn sticks, others couple shrimp OR tilapia, etc. I think every other day is more than sufficient. However, I noticed it gets mad and splashes when I'm around and don't feed...LOL

In terms of siphoning...it really depends on what your water parameters are. Nitrate levels, I think, will dictate how often you should siphon along with WC. Else, we're all just giving you what works for our tanks.

Hello FreshyFresh,

Thanks you for the compliments. Yes I understand the bio load is too much thats the reason I want to minimise the feeding. Also as mentioned above I am planning to give away the Arowana, 1 Oscar and 1 Blood Parrot. My water parameters are always good and compatible to the fishes I am keeping and I obtain that through 50-70% weekly water change, Purigen, Activated carbon and other media. As per your suggestion, I am planning to save and upgrade to a bigger tank.

I didn't get you when you said minimise the feeding? Do you suggest to feed less than alternate days and they will be fine? Thanks everyone for suggestions and advise.

Regards,
Additya

My thoughts were, if you're struggling with nitrates or water quality concerns, feed only 3-4x per week. Healthy adult fish can go weeks without having food added to the tank.
