Any thoughts of why and when Luteus change color?

I have heard it hypothesized as an aging phenomenon but having just seen a 12 inch solid black individual - there has to be more to the story.

Water parameters, food, gender, etc.?

Curious on others thoughts?

I have wondered the same. Hopefully, we'll get some experienced opinions.

Unfortunately, there may not be many if any true experts with this Pleco. It all may be conjecture as they are available at larger sizes in general. I would be interested in experimenting with a few phase 1 with water parameters and food and watching if and when they change color.

I don't think anyone knows for sure. Probably just some educated guesses and personal experience
Well aware that no one really knows. I've read all the literature available on them and the most common hypothesis is that it's purely an aging phenomenon but believe that there is more to it.

There are a limited few of us who have kept them. I would like to experiment with different water parameters and foods with severe phase 1 specimens.

I've seen a few over the past 6 years or so. The largest being 18" and phase 2., mostly black with yellow fins. Also have recently send some 12-13" solid yellow ones.

One time I saw a group of 12-14" ones all were solid black with yellow spots, phase 1, no yellow at all on body or fins.
