Tank mates for top of tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you to everyone who has weighed in! I look up each species you recommend to see how it mix (tank size/params...etc) . Right now this is what I have:
55Gallon (planning on moving to a 125G this summer:

3 x 2-3inch Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus senegalus)
2 x 3inch Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus)
1 x 6inch Peacock Eel (Macrognathus siamensis)
1 x small pleco
1 x 7 inch Ropefish (he is longer but his head/mouth are the size of the polys)

Some of the Australian rainbow fish are pretty cool... there are some sparkly red ones that I fancy. ;)
That is my top pick as of now!
I have ruled out bala sharks as they are awesome but get huge.. perhaps if I get a 250Gallon haha. I am thinking of adding some top swimmer and maybe one more clown loach. then calling it done. I also really wanted some young spotted leaf fish but I dont want to overload my bio load on this tank.

what I do to fill the top of the tank is mollies and guppies and as they get eaten I replace them
Wouldn't use them as a food source. But would use larger tetras and barbs. Pink tail chalceus, hujeta gate, characin pikes, butterfly fish, and red tail cudas will be a better choice.

They are by far not the main food source they are there if the bichirs and eel get hungry between feedings and truthfully they only disappear at a rate of 1 or 2 a week

That is an interesting strategy, do you just like mollies? or is it more of a food source when needed?
