Dosing for PraziPro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't remember you saying you use a water conditioner, do you? And just for the record I don't believe your pH is negatively affecting your fish. ~8.0 is just about right for a JD. They're extremely hardy as well and I'm going to guess yours is captive bred, all these factors make pH less of a deterring factor.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I do use water conditioner when doing water changes and also when I setup this tank. I use Seachem Prime, if I detect any further metals in the water after that I always have Dechlor brand conditioner. It's literally just a dechlorinator with nothing else added.

As for the pH that's really helpful information, I like hearing that my H2O conditions aren't as bad as I thought. Maybe now I can stop worrying so much about getting that lowered. But this head 'thrashing' and 'shuttering' is definitely not normal JD behavior right? As of right now, my plan is to continue with the treatment schedule that I posted earlier, I'll be going ahead with the second treatment of Prazi Pro this afternoon.

Testing your water parameters too soon after dosing with Prime can give you some bogus values. That could be why you got a positive ammonia reading after the water change.

Yeah do not worry about adjusting pH, especially when it's for a JD. If you were really gun ho on keeping Uaru Fernandezyepezi you should be worried but not for just a JD. Can you try to get a video of him having one of his episodes?

Yea actually I think I could grab a video, it'll take some time but I'll see what I can do.

Shoot, so yesterday, I dosed extra prime from that ammonia reading I got....Could that be harmful to my fish?

I probably overdose a little bit by accident with each water change I do and my fish have never suffered as a result.

Well my little red terror is eating this morning and digging in the gravel so that's pretty normal behavior, like I mentioned I'll be doing that 2nd dose of prazi today and I'll get a video up as soon as I can grab one.

Alrighty, so it's Wednesday now, after starting treatment on Friday by my count I am now on day 6 of treatment with Prazi Pro so I'll be hitting the tank with another dose right after this post. I did end up catching one of my JD's 'episodes' late last night. It's a more moderate one than what I have witnessed before, but the characteristics are all there. Namely, the head shaking/shuttering, the flashing or scratching of his head area in particular on ornaments and gravel, and finally this jaw/mouth snapping that I see him do a lot when I feed. Almost like he wants to eat but something is stopping him? This is also the times when I see him do a head shutter as well. He goes through these bouts and then goes back to seemingly normal behavior for hours on end. At any rate here is the video I was able to grab:
Any and all comments and suggestions are appreciated greatly!

I just noticed my JD started doing what you're describing too. Only after I had to move a bunch of fish from my 90 to the 55 he is in because of some water issues I was having in that tank. If I fix it I'll let you know what I did!

Is there something wrong with his mouth? Could that be the early stages of columnaris? duanes duanes knows a lot about diseases.

I wanted to chime in and say that I treated my 75g for 7 days as a preventative treatment with all healthy fish and they never changed their behavior AT ALL. So from my experience with prazi pro I would have to say its not the cause of this.
