Most Gentle Large Cichlid Pairs in Your Experience

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You've had some good recommendations above, and I know you are on the New world thread, but a large tank with group Frontosa is beautiful! Very peaceful too.

Extreme tolerance, when fish are forced into extreme conditions.......

I also like to see posts like duanes above who has a realistic approach to the size of tank these type of fish need.

ditto

I agree. ^ if I were to start up another large cichlid tank Frontosa are close to the top of my list. After seeing some tanks with them, and seeing one in person at a fish shop, they are simply gorgeous.

Not that I'm recommending this nor guaranteeing it would work for anyone else, but I kept a festae pair for several years in a 125 and the male was never aggressive to the female. I did also keep a few male convicts in the tank too and they worked very well as target fish. They're tough little bastards and I had a fee hiding spots only they could get to in case things got too rough.

Not big and not my experience but apparently pelvachromis are fairly easygoing. Especially in harems

Front is polygamous, and do not form pair bond. Juvenile Fronts are peaceful, but exhibit delayed aggression once reaching maturity. The reason you see many apparently peaceful Front colony tanks is that they cannot be housed in a single pair, and must have number to diffuse aggression. Most Front keepers had to remove extra males in a matured colony due to males intolerance. I once had a big male Front killed off his mate and half a dozen large Africans in a crowded tank.

Just wanted to add that I had a Green Severum mating pair in a community tank and they were quite peaceful to each other and the other fish.
