How many vieja melanura/synspilum all male tank would be suitable for a 300 gallon at the max at adult size. Currently I'm growing out 9 sub adults around 5 to 7 inches but am planning on downsizing the stock once I know for sure ones I want to keep.

Depends on the type of vieja, I'd say 7-10 wouldn't be unreasonable with proper rockwork/cover. Breeding pairs will throw a wrench in the mix as well

All males aside, water change size/frequency & filtration (type as well as cleaning schedule) will play a large role on how many 14+" fish you can comfortably keep.

Ya i think I'd like to just keep 7 or 8 adults at the most in there. I really hate any sort of overcrowded tanks.

I'm also a water changing freak. I do 20 to 30 percent water changes every other day for them and will until they're closer to mature adults.

Then toss some juvie males together, and adjust down the road when/where needed. That's about you can do. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

Well as of now there has been zero issues. All the fish have gotten along greatly for 3 to 4 months now. More was just curious how many would do well in a 300 gallon without it looking too crammed. Have never owned full grown melanura and other Vieja species. Will just be keeping the showiest ones as well so a few will most likely end up going. The 3 male Rio sarstun melanura I have will for sure be staying haha. Theyre unreal and quite chill. My Male Melanura from the Laguna Yaxha region is the dominant fish but is still no issue in the tank. I'll post a video soon and show you what I have going on
