It isn't overkill if you don't want HOBs and plan on stocking a lot of fish. I have one that I do not find to be loud.

I could hear it run and then every 12 hours it auto shuts off and gurgles to release air. I personally hated the thing, some on here love them though.
To be clear, all of my tanks have radiant noise. Maybe the noise from the fx6 was just in the range that got under my skin. But with the auto burp thing and constant maintenance (which is excruciating when it's constant) it drove me nuts. I had it about a year and finally had enough of taking it apart every 2 weeks to keep some flow. I run a eheim 2262 on one of my tanks and yes it has the same lid screws but the maintenance isn't anywhere near as bad.

N it's dead silence,my air pump makes more noise than the filter
I may just get the 406
I like my 2262 quite a bit. Nice and quiet. But for the price I could have set up 4 big sun suns full of seachem matrix and still been money ahead.
The list of things I've wasted cash on in this hobby is long and horrible. Mostly due to improper or lack of research, listening to lfs people, wanting something and settling for something less it goes on and on.
