Often overlooked evidence of breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very interesting..

Is there always supposed to be a sperm plug for a mating to be successful?

I believe so Maria. Their sperm forms a plug to maximize reproductive potential, and possibly to deter other males. I'm sure the majority of it falls out in time. I rarely find or see them despite lots of breeding activity. Leads me to believe they break down over time, are eaten, or removed by filters before we generally notice them.

Thanks very much for explaining....
This is the kind of detailed info you dont find anywhere else and believe me i have read everything i can find on rays...
I would have probably gone into panic mode if i saw it on one of my girls!!!

I don't always find the sperm plug, but with a host of other fishes in the tank it's quite possible it is consumed.
