Hi, I was hoping for some input as I'm finding alot of conflicting information.

I want a fahaka puffer but only if I can comfortably house him his full life. I have an empty 125 gallon 6' x 19" tank for him at the moment and with the way my fish room is set up I can't go any deeper for a 180 gallon.

So would he be ok/comfortable and have enough turning room in a 125 19" deep tank as an adult?

Thank you.

I think it may be okay for a while but where you would have a problem is on the width of the tank front to back. That fish could hit 15 inches so the width of the tank is pushing it.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. :(

Buy small and give yourself time. Do you think a 24 inch wide tank is possible in the future? Or you could go for a species that stays a little smaller maybe?

A wider tank won't be possible without a total reconfigure of the fish room we just put in. So I really don't see it happening ... but I guess you never know.

And yeah we really had our hearts set on a fahaka, it's rare that my husband and I find something we both want lol, but if we can't , I'll look into an Amazon bee puffer. We do have a couple empty 40breeders that aren't spoken for.

They are kind of spendy right now, but have you considered the Tetraodon schoutedeni?

Good suggestion above with the Schoutedini. They are interactive, attractive, and can live for life in a 40. You could even put some tankmates (with a backup plan just in case). They seem to generally do OK with schooling fish and cories.

We talk about them a little in the "What Puffer is This" thread in this forum.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing, but I'm finding the Amazon and fahaka puffers for about 30ish $ while the tetraodon scoutedeni I'm finding is 350$ + .

As much as I'd love a puffer I don't think I could swing the better part of 400$ for one. Am I looking at the wrong thing?

I would say most places are selling them for around $200. Some places are cheaper. Definitely not a cheap fish, either way, but it does fit the small, freshwater, and "community" bill. They are becoming more abundant know, so I'm guessing the prices should keep falling over time. We just bought one the other day that will arrive here on Thursday.

As for community, I don't mind having a single specimen tank at all, and I don't really want small as long it can be comfortable in one of my free tanks. 125, 40

The freshwater is a must though.

I take it a fahaka puffer just isn't going to be ok in a 125? So he is out all together?
