Who has a large dovii ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think a male dovii would be far from boring. I assure you if you get the right one they have the mentality of a serial killer! Splashing water trying to kill whatever comes close when all you're trying to do is feed them!

But you may want something more along the lines of community tank instead of a single specimen tank.

Jags are pretty active as well. That or a black nasty might be more of what you're looking for. The Dovii are shy for awhile until they get around 10" -also I hate to species drop in the wrong section but even when they're not doing anything a Fahaka Puffer is never a boring fish...

Yea I had a fahaka in my 220 loved the guy hated cleaning up the shells of the snails and crayfish, I was actually looking at maybe even mbu because they tend to be a little more peaceful

Personally I think a lone Dovii would become boring after time. Especially when you consider all the options you have for a tank that size.
Obviously we all enjoy different things.
To me,it seems a waste of a nice big tank.

well, knowing Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 he would probably do a south or central American biotope lol. I've seen his old GT tank and that was amazing. If I were you, I wouldn't do the dovii. It sounds like you are looking for more of a community setup, with a lot going on. A dovii would be amazing and certainly entertaining however they are more personable, although IMO most large cichlids are better kept in pairs. I would recommend a cichlid community. Something with a mix of American cichlids. I would say with a tank this size a combination of amphilophus species, maybe some smaller parachromis and what not. Definitely a few more options. But I think you would have enough space for a group of those cichlids to co-exist and have their own territory. It would offer a little more action and movement in the tank. One thing I love about those types of tanks is watching the interactions between each individual fish, It's so entertaining to analyze cichlids social behavior.

I agree with MP_cichlid.
In a tank that size you have some great options open to you. Personally speaking I get a little bored of one big fish, but that's just me.
As MP_cichlid pointed out the interaction between species and species diversity has much longer lasting appeal to me.
In a big tank like that you don't want too many potential trouble makers as catching them and addressing the situation could be a pain in a tank that size.
I would also like to observe breeding behaviour without being over run with fry.
A carefull balance can be achieved by choosing the right species.
A central American biotope is very achievable in a tank that size and with some dramatic aquascaping you could have a very enviable display.
A harem of large veija and a large flock of thorichthys or Rheoheros would look amazing complimented by a few hundred swordtails.
However as I said I like diversity and nothing offers diversity like a south American tank.Catfish, tetras, cichlids and oddballs galore. So much choice for a amazon theme.
If the tank were mine(I really wish it was)
I would stock something like this.
Upper levels I would have about 30 pink tailed chalceus. A beautifully large shoaling characin that stay near the surface.
For the middle I would have about 40 silver dollars. In large groups they look amazing as they flock together and glide across the tank.I would also have 6 wide bar myleus, another beautiful shoaler.
For cichlids I think I would add about 6 large uaru, big beautiful and generally quite peacefull.
And for the bottom and also fry control I would have 8 ornate pims or a couple of small stingrays.
I think that stocking would keep me satisfied for years.
The tank would be active you can observe breeding behaviour and you won't be over run with fry.
However that's just my taste, you may be happier with something completely different.

Omg yes I was just thinking about this last night, doing fish that can breed but won't kill the rest due to over aggression and I won't be killed with fry, and a lot of different species I will definitely check out those species thank you !

Chalceus are fun. Had one for a while then sold it, very fast eaters. Only had one so can't comment on schooling
