Catfish ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think jurs are particularly fragile as long as they're over 2-3" or so. They have a moderate growth rate and voracious appetites. They're definitely active predators. As long as they're not being actively bullied, they're reasonably hardy.

Thx for commenting man. Whats your thoughts on housing juru and a vulture cat in say a 300 gal ?

I'd be worried about the vulture. They have the teeth to bite chunks out of things, and would likely dramatically outcompete the jur.

True from general considerations.

But I personally wouldn't worry about it. Although I wouldn't worry about it based on my experience, IDK how representative it is - too few data points out there. People either don't do vultures much in communities or don't report it or fail to grow them large enough in community settings and large enough tanks.

My vultures mellowed down 100x when it comes to feeding after they reached 12"+. Neither do they appear to bother any fish that's alive, with black ear shark catfish being one notable exception, as I reported. https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...ultures-and-5-black-ears.675034/#post-7585957

My vultures remove yummiest parts of dead fish with surgical precision. So when you see that in my photos, that's been done post mortum and had nothing to do with a cause of death.

The obvious caveat is that I am basing my opinion on 4500 gal. 300 gal can be different. Neither do I have a large jur in the 4500 gal but only tigs and 6 large vultures.

Thx guys and im thoroughly enjoying reading the descriptions given.

Havent opened it up to the family to choose yet but i have another question.

Lets say i attempt the vulture/bolt/juru thing right now i can move the pearsei to the 300gal poly tank and free up the 150 for the cats to grow with some heterospilus. I would then have a 75 gal to keep on hand incase i run into problems until i get the new 300ish.

That sound ok ? Would the 150 be alright if all are between 4 and 5 inches ? Also which should i get 1st ?

I may be able to do 96x36 instead of 30 (width) on the cat tank just need to take a few more measurments

96x36 would be a great size tank for these medium sized cats. They'd really appreciate that extra 6" when they're fully grown. It's what I'm hoping for for my next upgrade as well.

The 150 would be fine for the size of the fish for quite some time, the jur most of all because they like to park themselves in current. They're not as active as a lot of other cats their size. The other cats would be fine for a while too, but they may start to feel cramped a bit earlier.

I make not guarantees expressed or implied about whether they'll play nice with each other though :p

Guys are juru mostly captive bred or wild caught ?

I'd give this combo a try. It'll be a long time if ever before jur can present risk to bolt.

I'd get jur comfortable first. Bolt and vulture are typical catfish, ravenous. Jur's not.

I am not aware of any farm raised Brachies. Anyone?

Does anyone know if any are tank raised sometimes? I know many wanted to do this with tigs.

The votes have been cast...wifes surprised me a bit.
I made them choose in order of importance. Basically if we only get one which would it be.

Also explained the size issue with the jags. Kind of sucks as they really are beautiful but id like to get down to two big tanks and not have to set up a 3rd for when the other cats outgrow them.

Wifes -
Vulture, trachy trachy, juruense. She actually chose the trach trachy 1st but then switched to the vulture as her top pick lol

Son
Bolt, vulture, juruense

Daughter
Juruense, vulture, bolt
