I will be putting a 29 gallon sump on my 65 gallon soon and still havent decided what sump to use. Recently I've been considering a fluidized k1 micro sump with 3 chambers. 1st chamber will be filters socks, 2nd chamber will be the k1 and 3rd chamber will be the heater and return pump. I got the tank and put some masking tape on where everything would be. The middle chamber (k1) would have a volume of about 56 liters. From all my research it seems like I would be able to stuff way more k1 in there than I would ever actually need. I want something that will effectively filter my tank but I enjoy putting these together just as much as the end result. Any comments? I know I could throw a bunch of submerged media in there and call it a Day but I'm not sure if I want too.

Keep in mind, the micro being smaller also means you can create a much denser bed. It need more air but makes an awesome looking end product. It sounds like you enjoy your setup more than just the function. Same here. You have the right idea and a K1 bed would certainly filter your tank.

The micro is a pain to keep in its place though. I ordered a sheet of matala mat (grey), cut it to fit and used that to contain the K1 and act as adjustable baffles. And it looks nice so it may be worth looking into.

Never done a sump or k1 but poret foam can act as removal baffles depending on how you need to make water flow.

I saw diyfishkeepers larger setup and was thinking of just copying him. Use pieces of acrylic as baffles with lots of holes drilled so water can flow into all the chambers.

Same here never done k1 filter. Im currently running a 29g 4 camber sump

Can anybody recommend an air pump capable of handling around 30 liters of k1? Quieter the better

IMG_5593.JPG Put some acrylic baffles in it. Will probably go in soon and drill some more holes between the return and media chamber. I like it so far and it seems that if for some reason I don't go fluidized k1 I could still do a normal submerged sump
