Picked him up at a store today just labeled "Vieja". At first I was thinking Synspilum based on a quick search, but not so sure now.

Definitely looks vieja but I wouldn't guess synspilum. Maybe zonatus. Theres a few that look similar at this size, with the black horizontal line.

Could be Vieja fenestratus it's hard to say at this size.

Not Melanura there line reaches less then half of the body length. Not bifasciatus they have two lines, yours hasn't got a overbite so not a hartwegi could be fenestratus, coatzacoalcos

I'm leaning more towards Zonatus or Coatzacoalcos, but I still think there's possibility of Vieja Fenestratus. Should become clearer as he/she gets bigger.

What is the temperament of Fenestratus and Coatzacoalcus? Sounds like Zonatus is on the aggressive side for Vieja/Paratheraps.

In my opinion temperament is very similar with these Vieja/Paratheraps. They're large growing, boisterous and very hardy fish that can be as aggressive/territorial as any other CA cichlid, especially during breeding.

Below is a young bifasciatus

now the same fish when mature

OP yours is just too young to make any real determination, although the points that dan518 are all right on the money.
You will need to let it grow for any accurate ID. Even with your photo edited to make the details of the fish easier, at this age, not realistic.
I have kept zonatus, fenestratus and guttalatum, and when young could not tell them apart with any certainty.
