My Rope Fish

J jaws7777 kno4te kno4te Thank you both for helping out. Sadly, this morning, both the Tiger Barb and Ropefish passed away. Just in time though, I received the Aquarium Hose and immediately did a 60% water change followed by 2 cap fulls of Prime. And hour later, the tank is clean and the nitrite level is back to 0. I will also go out and purchase the Tetra safe start in case this issue comes up again. Thank you guys!

I'm sad to hear you had some losses, but happy to hear you dropped your nitrites back down.

I'm just confused about your situation - I don't understand how you had a tank set up but weren't doing water changes... but you've had the fish for a year or two?

Also, rope fish should not be kept in brackish water. Your other rope should be removed and put in a freshwater tank.

I don't think tiger barbs like brackish either. Not sure about the gars.

Sorry for your loss.

Also confused about the brakish setup. Was there a reason for doing brakish? Not sure if any of the species you listed will thrive in brakish. From my experience, salt is used for sick polys. They did get better in the salt, but it did cause some eye problems for one of my polys. I'm still currently dealing with cloudy eye. Booo.

Typically I associate brackish with 1.005-1.0010.
Salt 1.021-1.026.
Freshwater 1.000.

I would consider what you were doing very very low end brakish. Again just wondering if there was a reason for this approach? Was it because of sick or stressed fish?

very sorry to hear about your loss. Getting tanks cycled/parameters straightened and solving fish health problems at the same time is very challenging. I feel for you. That's been like an everyday thing for me.Would definitely suggest the advice posted above by the other members!

Yes. There are no freshwater snowflake eels. I have seen ropes in brackish tanks before.....don't know anything about it. Not sure on the barbs either.

There are so many different names for it, its never called the same thing by people. Videos all over youtube call it a "freshwater snowflake eel" because in its early stages it lives in freshwater but then it needs to be introduced into brackish for it to live happy. I bought it when it was called the "marble moray eel" but now everyone just calls them snowflake eels even though they really arent the white and goldish coloration you see on the "true" snowflake eel. Not really sure but, its just really confusing xD
 
They are a true brackish to salt eel. They can and will go in fresh water while young but return to brackish or full salt as adults. Keeping these in fresh water will eventually kill them.
 
Rope fish can tolerate low salt levels like 1.003 to 1.006 but any higher and people say they start acting weird and sometimes die.
 
Hmmmm.... in my mind polys are 100% freshwater. I didn't know that ropes were any different. I've just read about polys not tolerating salt well, and have never heard of anyone keeping them in a brackish tank.
