Hi it's still me planning my arowana tank have a question on fire eels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh hi gallantry:p:p still having trouble with bottom feeder will a peruno and an aro fit in the 5 foot I've managed to convince my bf to get a smaller tank for his oscars and give me back my 5 foot tank hehe

your bf sure love his cichlids...

have you considered a school of Synodontis eupterus aka Featherfin Catfish?

just curious, wouldn't that be the job of the filter?

Wouldn't what be the job of the filter? Changing the water or removing the nitrates?

Using current technology and the same cost assumptions most people use, the best method of controlling nitrates is to remove nitrate contaminated water in the tank and replace it with fresh, nitrate free water.

There are other reasons for replacing the water as well, but that is the most common reason. Filters are not expected to remove nitrates.

thanks.. i think i know what you meant

Yes. Nitrate buildup in that tank would become detrimental to the fish health and need to be removed that often. The filter's job is to handle the ammonia and nitrites that would kill the fish relatively quickly if they stopped functioning. The filter converts those to nitrate. but nitrate isn't harmless. Just not as lethal.

Nitrate build up won't kill the fish quickly. It will reduce their appetite and their immune system and kill them gradually.

Oh we have those feather fins in the 327 g 7 of em haha so will my rtg arowana and a peruno fit in my 5 foot tank

"I have two asians in 8 foot tanks that both started out in 6 ft 180s. In my humble and honest opinion, a 6 foot tank is not long enough although many keep them in smaller tanks. If you want them to have the room to bolt without smashing lids when they get spooked, and they do, 8 feet is ideal. My gold used to smash the lids when he spooked in the 6 footer and hasn't hit the lids since being in the 8 footer. He spooks occasionally but goes the length of the tank instead of vertical."

to prevent the aro from hitting the lids, he only have to lower the water level... having a bigger tank will not stop the aro from hitting the lid if water level is high... unless he means the sides of the tank rather than the lids

and if his aros often get spooked, the reason is to find out why....

and if his aros often get spooked, the reason is to find out why....

The reason why was given, all aros spook in tanks, especially small tanks. Same reason silver dollars are spooked all the time in small tanks and just cruise in big tanks. The post was yet another attempt/reason to dissuade the op from keeping an aro in "a large but still too small tank"

spook yes but should not be often... my aro initially get spooked and even drop scales at the top of head... i realised and researched that lowering the level will help so that is what i did and i had no drop scales now

Then i observed i usually discovered drop scales in the morning thus it should have happened at night, and i observed and realised he gets jumpy when all lights are off so i turned on the fish tank light and now all is fine..

what i am trying to say is, even if you have a big tank but high water level... the aro will still hit the lid when spooked..
