A few of my natives

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Darters look good!

Legality around natives here is wierd and difficult to understand
It's actually very cut and dry here in Pennsylvania. The laws are very clear on what's legal and what is not. The Pennsylvania fish and boat commission is actually a very efficient and practical agency. Not all states have this luxury! And certainly not all countries!!

That's good. I'm going to discuss this with someone soon to see what can be done, I know native shrimps can be collected with a bait license so I'll see.

A lot of stuff here is threatened or endangered, so I need to look at what isn't and what's close to me. I don't have tanks for it anyway, some would do well in a hillstream type setup

The way it works here, if you can legally catch it fishing, you can do what you want with it. Darters fall under baitfish. Limit of 50 and no size restrictions. They do put restrictions on how big of a net you can use. 4 feet in any direction is the max net size.

That's nice, some fish aren't allowed to be caught intentionally I think

Send 50 my way :p

Laws are clear on that too...no fish caught in commonwealth of Pennsylvania waters can be bartered, traded, or given away. They do this to ensure that no populations of fish will be exploited for monetary gain. If I get my wild caught darters to breed in captivity I'll be able to do as I please with the offspring though!

divemaster99 divemaster99 r u planning to breed your darts and madtoms? With most species in these groups the breeding requirements are well published and not too difficult to do in home aquaria

Probably not. I’ve been keeping Darters for several years now and I still haven’t seen any signs of spawning activity from the species I’ve kept. If any of my fish happen to spawn on their own, I’ll definitely setup a tank for the fry. But, I’m more just a fan of keeping them in general.

Same here, my darters haven't spawned that I've seen. My sticklebacks have built nests, but no fry.
