Ok, having been quite rightly talked out of keeping a Synspilum, pair in a 72x18x27,I've turned my eyes to either a chocolate or uaru pair. The plan is to grow out 6 2-3 inchers of one of the species in the hope of getting a pair, in your opinion, which of these fishes is more active and responsive?, thanks in advance.

I like chocolate better myself. Although I believe Uaru are probably more popular.
I would say temperament between the two are similar.

I like Uaru better... fernandezyepezi are really awesome when they get large, though the regular amphiacanoides (I know spelling is wrong) are cool too

Uaru have more interesting breeding behavior, if that's what your end goal is. Both genera are really fun to keep fish in my opinion.

Also as mentioned above, both species are excellent candidates to build a really interesting community around.

Uaru are the more demanding species in terms of water quality, especially fernandezyepezi.

The chocolates are easier to keep and will hold their own better against more boisterous tankmates, within reason.

For me it would be an easy decision. The Uara are a fish I have always wanted.
