Just wondering if Black Angels are more agressive than other variety of angels? Think I read this somewhere. Just bought 2 of them to put in my 90 gallon with 10 Orange Koi angels. Looking to see if one of the blacks pairs with a Koi.

I had a black angel and it was actually nicer then my gray stripe angel

Sometimes in certain strains you'll notice different behaviors. Discus, for instance -- snakeskin types tend to be a little more skittish and touchy. My experience with hybrid black angels (that carried gold genes) were that they could be flighty and crazy, but not necessarily aggressive. A lot of times that just boils down to the personality of the individual fish.

In my experience, black Angels are a lot more sensitive to water conditions than a lot of the other colour varieties

Also wondering if a black angel breeds with a Orange Koi angel what the offspring would look like. Would 50% be black and 50% koi or would they all be 1/2 black and 1/2 koi?

It would depend on the genetics of the black Angelfish. There are DD (double dark) blacks, hybrid blacks, black blushing, etc. You’d have to know the genetics of the parent fish to know what you’d get.

For instance, if one parent is true koi and one is true double dark black, 100% of the fry will look like this:

http://www.theangelfishsociety.org/phenotype_library_2007/2 Locus Phenotypes/blackghost.html

If one parent is true koi and one parent is a hybrid black, you’ll get 50% gold marble ghosts and 50% hybrid black ghosts.

But this assumes the genetics are pure and there are no curveballs hiding in the recessive genes, which is unlikely with most angels. So you’ll probably end up with a mix of phenotypes.

I was actually hoping they would look Orange with a lot of black mixed in. It does seem complicated when you get into genetics.

Angel genetics don’t work that way. If you want high coverage black on your koi you can’t just breed them with black angels.

The best thing to do would be select koi with lots of black coverage and then try to breed those in the hopes of getting fry with more black. But coverage on the fry is going to very from lots of black to very little black. That’s just how koi are. Much like Steve Rybicki has line-bred koi for 30 years to improve their red coverage, you’d have to breed for years to increase the amount of fry showing lots of black coverage. Otherwise you’ll just have to hand-pick them for the amount of black you want out of batches of fry.
