Polys and tannins

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup especially when the fish come from soft water. Some oscar guys think theu do better in soft water chuck full.of tannins.

Im not sure this exists in an abundance in the lakes/rivers these fish come from. I would probably pass on the idea not knowong whar the long term exposure would do.
Depends on locality and everything.

Maybe it doesn't, but I don't think it is necessarily harmful either

Say it again as long as it not a rapid change most fish can tolerate alot. Whether or not it's good for them is another topic all together.

I use an additive to increase specific water carbonate hardness for plant growth and it seems to help stabilize the tank with the introduced tannins. Since I started using driftwood and leaf based tannins in the water my pH has stabilized around 6.8 while the introduction of the carbonate for plant growth has kept the hardness around 12 gpg or 205 mg/L. The plants seem to be doing great and the fish seem to really enjoy the tannins and I’m sure they are benefiting from the antibacterial and fungicidal qualities as well.

Did the conversion for a more fish tank friendly reading - those levels put my tank at around 11.48 dKH which is slightly hard but great for plant growth and algae prevention. It does dip down a bit into more normal ranges if I add a lot of extra tannin introducing material or go lighter on the carbonate dosing

Tannin water set up looks great. Only downside is with the effects of ph staying at low levels. Certain fishes don't do well with it being in th 6's. It's a trial and error situation. For individuals who enjoy oversrockkng, lol. High bio loads such as the photos below(mine) can be problematic if it crashes (sudden ph drop). Usually due to overfeeding. Just got to keep an eye on parameters and the feeding regiment.

You're lucky. Ours is <2 degrees normally... I have to be super careful

Haha yeah helps when your tap water is sourced from granite and limestone caves/springs. Although the carbonate additive does do wonders. I can easily bring my pH up to 8.0 or higher with an increased weekly dose

We have very little alkaline rock here so yeah. I had my PH tested to 7.14 after a month without WC. Just gotta be careful

Order from Tannin aquatics showed up today! Super stoked!!! Going to hopefully have it in the tank sometime this week. Thinking I’m going to let the leaves and seed pods boil then soak for a day or two prior to introducing them so they all sink. I will be adding the water they boil in though as it will be super rich in tannins and all the other good stuff I’m after
