Can Oscars eat fruits??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i feed my oscar blueberries and peices of strawberries, along with king prawns, pieces of white fish and silver sides. fruits are fine, but i wouldnt feed him stuff like orange or grapefruit, it could be a little acidic. try some banana too, my oscar loves that.

heck my little baby oscar is a pig-every time i walk past the tank he begs like i starve him.

im going to try a bit of banana and see if he likes it. my oscar wont touch zucchini or yellow squash.

im pretty sure they could eat fruits and veggies. oscars arent too picky when it comes to eating :)

oscars have guts of steel. as long as your not feeding him rat poison, as soon as it hits the water he'll eat it and enjoy it.

Mine used to love diced oranges and pineapples. I would stay away from harder fruit like apples. Also I've seen people feed grapes and peas as well. However most say that you should buy skinless or shelled as they are easier on the Oscar's digestive system. Good luck and lets see some pics....

Can I buy our boys frozen shrimp and defrost them before feeding, is it true they can eat dog food? Of so what type? Meat or biscuits I mean. our boys love mealworms, garden worms, shelled garden peas and cucumber. Just want more ideas for them. Also we have a problem with one while my son is at school a particular one of them lays on his side at the back of the tank and his colour fades to greeny brown, he has black markings but they fade when my son's not home, when my son ces home he comes back out and follows his very move. Can you tell me why he does this as we worry. I have attached photos of him, his name is OsKar

Don't feed the Oscar dog food, or really any other terrestrial based foods. Think about what the Oscar would eat in the wild. A good pellet is all you really need, with occasional frozen foods as treats. I recommend NLS over all other foods.

It sounds like your Oscar might be "pouting" as they're known to do this. They can be moody things. I would test your water as a precaution though. Would you mind me asking what size tank you have him in? Tank mates? Really cool looking Oscar!

That is an interestingly elongated Oscar. Haven't seen one quite like that. Looks like a wild type coloration too?
I have a friend who feeds his cichlids dogfood, as he has tons of large cichlids and gets the dogfood very cheap. His fish seem to do well on it actually, though his water is always a little cloudy. I don't think it is the cleanest food. I would recommend just getting a good pellet like Hikari Cichlid gold, which isn't all that expensive.
