Picked up a 535

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What size are those holes in the back? I'm guessing 3x1" or 1.5"... Assuming you use two drains you can calculate about how much water they will take, and then you size the pump to that number. I'd suggest creating a new thread so the smarter guys like jk Wednesday and a few others can organize thoughts without lots of convo in between. I recommend looking into the reeflo pumps, especially if you are only running one pump.

I would skip the K1 and just go with a static media like lava rock or ceramic media, or something like that. It will give you a higher bio capacity for the space.

For mechanical, I definitely recommend filter socks. I have foam and filter floss in my sump, and I really wish I would have gone with filter socks. I might still switch over if I ever get the time to put something together.

For flow rate, I recommend you look to get at least 5-6X the capacity of the tank. So, for this tank you’re looking to get about 3-3500 gph, depending on if you want to turn over the capacity of the tank or the capacity of the tank and sump together. I’m a big fan of the Jebao DCP pumps. For your tank, I would recommend two if the Jebao DCP 15000 or 18000’s. The 18000 should handle that flow at about 50-60%, which is about 75 Watts each pump. The 15000 you would have to turn up a bit more, but should still be able to do it, I just don’t have a curve. With these pumps, I have had great results running my 8000’s at about 55-60%, so I recommend that others try to get around that as well. I have heard the pumps can make a high pitched whine noise if they are turned up higher. My 8000’s are completely silent at 60%.

Thank you for the tips. I appreciate the detail on power usage and how high I should turn them up. Is it preferable to run two pumps opposed to one?

Also, thanks for plugging the socks. Was planning on them but wasn’t sure but your post definitely helps solidify that choice.

Hi Richard. Thank you for chiming in.

The holes are pretty large. I measured the cut PVC and it’s 2 inch holes. Good idea on posting another thread. I’ll have to do that for sure.

In your opinion, what’s the pros and cons of one pump vs two?

Run some Weldon 4 on that crack it will fill and be good as new
Thank you. That’s a huge relief. Just ordered some from Amazon with a small applicator bottle.

Do I simply squeeze a little into the crack with the applicator bottle and it’ll spread inside itself through some sort of capillary action?

Redundancy. If one pump fails you have another still creating o2. @2" you might be able to thread two pumps together on one return line. I'm not particularly well minded to the physical limitations nor planning of pvc, so you'll have to get the other guys to help you build an attack plan.

Exactly!

I have actually experienced this when there was a power outage while I was at work. One of my two DCP 8000’s errored out when the power came back on, so it was shut off. However, my second one came on just fine and ran my tank at half flow until I got home several hours later. Fortunately, I just had to unplug the errored pump and plug it back in to reset it, and I haven’t had a problem with it since.

Precisely
