This is my first post here still figuring out the site ive gotten alot of great info from other posts but as my fish grow im going to need a bigger tank i have a black tiger oscar, a jack dempsey, a fire mouth, a convict, and a raphael catfish (going to trade the catfish in) so that being said just for my cichlids hiw big of a tank will i need or could i get away with

i wouldnt trade the raphael in. you will need his bottom feeding skills for cleaning up the messes all those other fish will inevitably make.

i think all those fish could live together in a 125-150 gallon, 5 or 6 foot long tank. a 180 gallon or even 240 would be ideal though. you can expect the con, jd, and firemouth to get rough with each other as they mature, and more space gives them better chances of coexisting.

I live in a 14 by 70 trailer so tank weight may be a factor im not sure thought i have a 125 but after i bought it i found a chip in the outer edge of one of the long panes and if you look close theres a crack accross the thicknes of the glass and that scares the hell out of me im most likely gonna buy a new setup with my tax money as far as the raph hes never out thats why i wanna trade him and i gravel vac at every water change anyway

I love all the cichlids but the convict and firemouth are little *******s i got them because the jack was bullying the oscar and now they bully the jack which im sure wont have a happy ending after a while

125 is the ideal size for all these to live together. And the Raphael will come out more as he gets adjusted and especially if given time in the 125 to stretch his fins. Raphael are such awesome catfish and they develop a wonderful personality.

I have a rubber lip pleco in my other tank hes way more active the raph has been in the tank for a few months now and just stays in one of the decorations i just dont see much of a point in it because its like hes not in there anyway at this point

very well i can understand all your gripes with the awesome raphael catfish.

i will volunteer to take him off your hands free of charge. you can ship him to me at your convenience.

Well I can totally understand that. Its always nice to see the fish we love so much. One of my favorites is my Synodontis Multipunctatus. It tends to want to hide about 50% of the time, but anytime food is put in hes ready to go and out to get it.

Mixing Central American and South American cichlids can work sometimes, but more often it results in these problems. SA cichlids are much more inclined to share a tank. CA want to kill everything else. Your Oscar is SA, the rest are CA.
