Im sure most have seen coverage of this atrocity already, but I thought I would open a discussion about it.

Cannot believe these things are still happening, something must change.

Anyone here live close by?

"Cannot believe these things are still happening, something must change"

Its sucks to admit it but i totally agree. There has to be some middle ground.

I watched some of the news coverage and cant believe what these poor kids went through

the middle ground is perhaps not allowing the general public access to assault rifles, when gun laws were created way back, guns were single shot rifles that took probably minutes to reload, not cannons capable of firing 50 rounds in 5 seconds.

As a UK resident, maybe I shouldn't be weighing in on this, but it really makes me glad we have strict gun control.

Doesnt matter if your from the UK. As a human being you have a right to comment.
The gun debate in this country is complicated.

How a firearm landed in his hands is amazing.

All it takes is passing a background check, which he was capable of doing apparently. And I agree, gun laws changing are a middle ground. I know people with various AR-15s with modifications that could cause serious damage. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely love guns and own many, but the AR class of weapons, extended clips, these are only used for destruction.

"Guns dont kill people, people kill people" couldnt agree more, so I am stuck at a middle ground.

Be careful with the term, assault rifle. This term is fabricated by the anti guns, and there's no specificity to what features on a rifle merits this term. People see a black, military looking rifle and automatically thinks its more dangerous than a wood grained stock hunting rifle. A unmodified AR15 is no more dangerous than a semi auto hunting rifle. But the general public are trained by the media to recognize black guns as only combat weapons and not in any way tools.

I agree that something has to change or this won't stop anytime soon. I'm hesitant to get too political here, but US gun laws IMO are far too lenient, and a large part of it has to do with the NRA lobbyists supporting politicians. People should be able to get hunting and sporting rifles, but I think tragedies like this demonstrate that AR-15's are too easily modified to cause mass destruction. Yes, people kill people. But people with slower guns kill less people. I also think that metal detectors and armed security should be present at all schools.
My heart goes out to those affected by this.

Forgot to add:
Do I think its too easy to buy guns in the USA?
Absolutely!

Its actually not much more difficult to modified a regular hunting gun into having a lot of the same features. An AR15 is mostly cosmetic, nothing really special about the scary looking stock(body).
Take a typical hunting shotgun, saw off a portion of the barrel, and now you hot yourself a combat weapon.
