Define an Aquarium Normie

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The normie doesn't exist here, it's the guy you buy fish off privately who has been doing it for 20 years, does a 10% WC a month and hasn't heard of the nitrogen cycle... He knows everything of course.
Anyone with goldfish, especially in a too small tank. Or parrots/flowerhorns.

I suppose my tank is pretty Normie too, but I love plecs and severums. And it's odds and ends fish just because I like them. And I haven't done water tests in years.

Majority of us here are aquarium normies.

Examples:

Keeping aggressive fish, that have the potential to kill each other or kill other peaceful tankmates, in the same tank.

Keep certain types of fish because they're fashionable/trendy at the moment. Avoiding keeping fish that may make one look inexperienced/newbie.

Time and effort on fish is determined by the fish's rarity/price tag.

Preference for brightly coloured fish as opposed to being interested in fish behaviour.

Breeding fish for the sake of achievement, even if there's no where to house the young or the prospects of re-homing them is unknown....

All these are so common in the fish keeping world, that they are accepted as the norm....

Some idiot who keeps a oscar in a twenty gallon, doesn't really do water changes and somehow still thinks he's "caring" for his fish...

A guy who packs a 55G with guppies and mollies, doesn't do water changes but pops a Tetra Water Conditioner tablet in once a month and says his fish are fine.

A normie is a person who walks into an LFS and points to a pleco and loudly proclaims "these fish eat poop"...
