EBAs and rummynose?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have breeding EBA and they are pretty docile towards other fish.
But part of their spawning rituals the males will grab plants and shake them and tear up bits of leaves and spit them as a display towards the females.

So in a tank that large it may not be a problem but in my 75 planted tank it has caused quite a bit of damage to the aquascape.
just an observation.

mine also do this. all my plants are fake though so its pretty comical to see the little guy towing one a foot long all about the tank.

I have half a dozen of EBA in my planted 75. A couple of them have paired up and start shaking leaves. I kept only tough texture plants like Java fern, Anubias and Buce, so no damage is done yet. Soft texture plants may not do as well.

EBA is not a predatory species. Aggression during breeding ritual or guarding fry is protective behavior, even dwarf cichlid will attack neighbors aggressively. In a 300g with plenty of room to escape, I see no issue housing with fast swimming Rummy.

Even predatory arrowana doesn't bother to hunt small neons in a big tank if well fed.

Welp. No dice for the rummynose. I put the EBAs in just over two weeks ago. They hadn’t bred for awhile but did so within 2 days. At that time there were about 12-15 rummynose. Today there are 5. Oh well. The acaras do really brighten up the tank though. Any ideas for schooling tetras that are taller bodied?

Columbian Tetras look nice.

blackskirts live with my ebas. they never squabble and compete well at feeding time with the various acaras, severums, and rainbowfish theyre housed with. theyre also one of the more striking schools of tetras imo once theyre fully grown.

for what its worth i dont think theyre killing them due to territoriality/breeding, but rather actively hunting and eating the rummys. heres a pic of one of my females and blackskirts hanging out while she guards fry. theyre actually the only fish in the tank she doesnt mind getting close.

the only large colorful tetra i can think of before you get up to silver dollar size are congos which are obviously not sa but still very pretty.

Craziest thing. The school of rummys are down to 3 and haven’t changed for quite awhile. I was losing about one a day before. Not sure what the ebas are thinking

How about roseline barb. They look like Rummy and can reach 6”. Unfortunately, few lfs carry Roseline over 2”, so you have to seach for the right size or grow them out in another tank for a few months.
