I had a group of cichlasoma amazonium that were about 2.5" eat three discus that were 4 to 5"! Picked them clean, only the skeletons left in the morning. Crazy part was they had grown up together for a couple months with no previous issues. My girlfriend calls them piranhas now.

Illegal as hell dude, your lingcod was not hooked, shame on you
That ain't true. If you catch a fish without using a drag net it's fine. Believe me fishing is one of my favorite pass times

i believe you're referring to snagging or foul hooking, which he didnt really do. i doubt the authorities would have a problem with catching the fish in this manner. i kept and ate a rockfish that leapt from the water into our boat once. not ashamed in the least.
Correct me if I'm wrong but as it is a sportfish it must be hooked voluntarily in the mouth.

Your assumption of where the fish was caught is the first wrong thing with your post, but you’re having a blast so keep going.
I checked all u.s states where lingcod are commonly found.
from the perspective of someone who has monitored accidental bycatch on commercial fishing rigs, i must say you are making quite the metaphorical mountain out of an ill-conceived molehill...
multiple wrongs do not make a right,if it was ok to do a smaller bad thing because bigger bad things happened than there would only be one bad thing in all of history.
Funny how you justify things
